# Site Access for Timber Deliveries: The Builder Readiness Checklist (Turns, Grades, Laydown) A heavy timber delivery can go wrong even when the package is perfect. The most common failure is not manufacturing. It is access: the truck cannot get in, cannot turn, cannot back, or cannot unload safely. This builder checklist helps you prevent failed deliveries, re-delivery fees, and schedule knock-on effects. ## Builder checklist: site access readiness ### 1. Confirm the actual truck type and length Do not assume. Ask what is arriving (semi, trailer length, forklift/boom presence). ### 2. Turning radius and approach Check the tightest turn from the main road to the unload point. If you are unsure, take a video of the approach route and send it for review. ### 3. Grade, traction, and soft ground risk Wet ground and steep grades stop trucks. Plan gravel/plates if needed. ### 4. Overhead clearance Trees, power lines, and temporary site utilities can block access and crane setup. ### 5. Laydown area size and surface You need a laydown area that stays accessible in rain and provides room to stage by pick order. ### 6. Unloading plan Who provides unloading equipment? Where does it stage? Is there room to swing? Do you need a forklift, lull, or crane? ### 7. Protection plan If install is not immediate, plan dunnage and coverage that sheds water without trapping moisture. ### 8. One owner for access readiness Assign one person to own access and laydown readiness.
